The Experience of Blogging and Social Media

This class was tougher than I expected. Fundamentals of Digital Online Media (FDOM) was a good toughness though. With the direction the economy is moving more jobs are going to require the skills provided in this class. The tools that I felt were the most affective were the Photography tips, which led to our slide shows and the HTML coding. Everyone and anyone is always going to need their picture taken. Knowing the considerations will help turn a plain picture into a Kodak moment. I thought that was pretty cool. As far as the HTML coding, if you know how to do it well enough you will always have a job.

The tools that didn’t stand out so much were the mobile app and some of the twitter social media stuff. There are thousands if not millions of apps out there and to try to upgrade one of the persons favorites may already exist. There creativity was there just the whole idea of the app actually existing. Twitter is a huge resource media and press look at, but for our topics I feel like they had gotten little to know love. Our followers know who we are and our interests. For that one I would have to say us posting something that’s more relatable to college students on twitter. The blog posts I was not familiar with because I’ve never had my own blog, but I can see where the 1,000 true fan idea comes from. If I’m writing about something someone else likes and its encouraging, How could they not want to support it ?

In all me being an advertising major this really helped. It helped me reaching out to others with the blog, being creative with the slide show & imovie and even make a web page from scratch. All important skills I will need to know when moving forward with my job. One day in the office I may need to promote our brand on Facebook or Twitter with just good content. I even may have to create an ad banner for the company website, who knows. What I know is that more time will be put into what I’ve learned this semester, thanks Zmikly.

This Man’s World Would be Nothing Without a Woman

Carey at Edwards Air Force Base during the making of “I Still Believe” video in 1998 – Wikipedia

Don’t let the title of the blog fool whomever is reading this, it’s so true! Yes the male has predominately ruled for all time but over time women have changed that. Through education, politics, the work force and now music. Well not so much music because they probably have the upper hand, but you get my point. This lovely place we call earth wouldn’t be anything without women. Defiantly the music industry with some of the greats such as Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Madonna and the list goes on and on.

The ageless woman Mariah Carey is one of the best to ever do it. For 25 years her beautiful song bird voice has been recognized as a premiere sound. Over 200 million records sold world wide, five grammy awards, 19 music awards, eleven american music awards and is one of the best selling music artist of all time. Scheduled to release on May 18th is her most recent album titled, “#1 to infinity.”Not as highly rated as her other albums, Carey only receives three and a half  stars for this project. I had to listen for myself to see why the rating was that low.

“#1 to infinity” is like a mixture of songs from the new school and the old. New school meaning like a lot of sound the r&b and pop artists use, such as an uptempo beat. It even has “Touch My Body” which was one of Carey’s number one singles in the U.S.back in 2008. When I listened to it I do now agree with the review. Not saying Mariah Carey doesn’t have it anymore its just that for me it there is usually a good sound of consistency. Remember this is basically just a Preview review since the album hasn’t actually released. I’m sure her true fans will purchase it because of their loyalty to Mariah and since it has a few hits that they loved.

Another Reviewable Hobbie

I had the chance to meet  Raul Cardenas aka Rudy in one of our Monday lecture meetings. We started talking about the class, general things and then our blog topics came up. I was telling him about mines over album reviews and why I chose that topic. He then began telling me he chose to write about movie reviews. How that usually word of mouth can determine if you see a movie or not. Same with my album reviews, if you haven’t heard it then you want an opinion from someone who has. Before class ended we wrote our blog names on a piece of paper and exchanged them.

Here I am now seeing if Rudy has good taste in movies or is his topic bias. Reading some of his content seems most recent towards movies. Such as the most talked about or most advertised on television. Never the less I would of liked to have seen maybe a movie which was portrayed badly but Rudy finding out it may have been decent. Just a future tip to a peer if he is struggling to find something to write about. There were some unique drawbacks from moiv3holic like me and him having the same theme for our blog and his movie app. Yeah people may have the technology to have that movie theater atmosphere but its not the same as being there. His app has actual monitors in a live movie theater so your not guaranteed to miss out if tickets are sold out.

There were other topics that I could of chose to review but this one stood out the most since I’m drawn into all movies. With the blog content comes mini stories but in actual movies there’s a whole story to be told. Which I also like about Rudy’s topic. So if your stuck and have no idea what to watch on netflix, go check out the movi3holic blog.

Who’s On Top?

In the Rap/Hip Hop world or any professional stage there always has to be a number one. It’s debatable due to peoples opinions and taste in music, but someone has to take the crown. Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean and Wale are currently three of the top artists in the rap game right now. Them including J.Cole and Drake always mention something in their songs about being on top. In the month of March and February is when three of the song writers album was released. Big Sean’s “Dark Sky Paradise”, Kendrick’ s “To Pimp a Butterfly” and Wale’s “The Album about Nothing”.

Big Sean’s album was the first to be released on February 24th. Since 2013, when his last album was released titled “Hall of Fame”, Sean’s career was looking like it was starting to fall. Some of his hits made Billboards Top 40 and had been played out by the time the album was released. Now being referred to his best album yet, Dark Sky Paradise has been a leap into the right direction. Some preferences to his ex wife Nay Rivera from the show Glee, to a track called “One man can change the world” dedicated to his grandmother. Sean’s lyrics were on point and his swagger has just seem to have grown.

“Honest, Fearful and Unapologetic” are a few words Kendrick Lamar used to describe his “To Pimp a Butterfly” album. Three years have passed since Lamar’s last album “good kid, m.A.A.d city” and that was a Multi Grammy award nominee. With the hype of that album, How could we not be so anxious to hear the next. For me I was a little disappointed about his new album, it just the Kendrick I was use to hearing. It’s a kind of good different which enlightens the culture. It incorporates funk, spoken word poetry and jazz. Initially the album titled “Tu Pimp a Caterpillar” , which was an abbreviation of the iconic Tupac Shakur. He later changed caterpillar to butterfly to show the brightness of life if you really listen and break it down you can be educated.

Lastly is Wale Folarin known as Wale. Wale has a strong relationship with Jerry Seinfeld from the hit show Seinfeld. Wale made a mix-tape in 2007 called “About Nothing” which had the graphic design of the Seinfeld logo. It put him on the scene as an artist which probably lead him from unknown to main stream. The Album about Nothing is kind of a continuation of his mix-tape but with a little help from Seinfeld himself. Track 13 “Matrimony” who also features R&B artist Usher, starts out with Seinfeld and Wale talking about marriage. Seinfeld explains “No one is ready for marriage because its growth and you can’t prepare for growth”.

All different styles brought to the table and all good music. Even though Big Sean is my favorite rapper I feel like Wale has the upper hand this time around. As for Kendrick Lamar, time will tell if I get into it. To classify any of these as number one would really be determined by sales and fan base.

KTSW “Lunchbox” Series Concert

Did any of you guys attend the KTSW lunchbox series concert? Well I had the availability to and I’m glad I attended it. The atmosphere was only a little of students, but I was able to interact with some of them. One of them being Hannah Bennett, Public Relations major and KTSW member, said she joined KTSW because she loves music and it ties into her major. When I told her about my blog topic she told me her favorite album was Church Mouth Portugal to Man album.

“Every sound changes but it’s a different feel than the normal one you get when listening to music” Hannah said.

Free pizza was given away and I was able to take home two of the albums. The lunchbox series is a monthly event so if anyone missed this event be sure to attend the next one at the Amphitheater near LBJ.

A Little Jazzy

Revive-Music celebrating Sonny Hollins Birthday

Revive-Music celebrating Sonny Hollins Birthday

Testing the waters where I haven’t been before. A type of music that has been around longer than most but doesn’t get as much publicity as others. Consisted of either a flute, saxophone or clarinet, Jazz music is the smooth calming sound of the music family. Reviewing over the top jazz albums from 2014, Sonny Hollins, Keith Jarret & Charlie Haden and Kenny Barron & Dave Holland was like opening a door to a fully furnished room. Everything was in top form and is complete with what it has in it.

  1. Sonny Hollins – Passing at the age of 84 Hollins career was nothing short of success. Whenever he was 13 years old he was handed his first saxophone. Hollins started out as a pianist in high school but later made the transition to tenor in 1946. When his first recorded in 1949 he had already worked with people like Miles Davis and Charlie Parker. Like everyone else life presented its struggles to Hollins. He had served some time in jail for drug use. Later reinventing himself his most recent album Road Shows, Vol 3(Okeh) is consisted of his unissued live performances from 2001-2012, topped at number one last year. The sample that I heard was more of an uptempo beat that sounds like it would be played at the beginning of the Cosby Show.
  2. Coming in at number two is the duet of Keith Jarrett & Charlie Haden. Last Dance(ECM) was Haden’s final album before he died last July. Its sample was a slow flow that had me thinking deeply. I actually envisioned I was at a poetry slam or something while listening. Currently Keith Jarrett is still battling chronic fatigue syndrome(CFS) but doesn’t stop him from performing live across the world.
  3. Kenny Barron & Dave Holland is another duel threat when they are together. Listening to their song The Oracle from their The Art of Conversation(impulse) album was probably my favorite of the three. Something I can consistently play when getting my work done to keep me focused. Seeing that Holland is on longer with us, there is only one left of the one-two punch. Nominated for nine Grammy awards and into the Jazz Hall of Fame, Barron has taught pianist like Earl MacDonald and Aaron Parks at the Juilliard School of Music

The Music A Mother May Forbid

rock this!

Parents usually never want their kids to be the type of musicians they see on TV. With the piercings, make up, and tattoos. Not all musicians look this way but a number of rock starts today portray that darkness look. Since the debut of rock in the 50’s the so called “satin’s music has became a popular choice of most. From Elvis Presley to Jimmy Hendrix and now Travis Barker, just like everything else rock music has evolved.

Listening to today’s rock is expressed with art but at the same time it’s aggressive. Linkin Parks music has a little bit of that and rap mixed together. “Best band ever” is what I’ve been told, but could they really compete with the iconic Beatles? Soon I will know the answer when my ears become a judge of both sounds. That is what makes rock that much better is that its not a individual competition, the band is composed of 3 or more members making a team effort.

Starting of 2015 the right way is the California native Beck. Literally at the top of the charts, he was able to perform during the Grammys and also capture one. Reviewing Imagine dragons latest album is sure to please. “Smoke + Mirrors” is competing for the number one spot on the billboards against Drakes “If your reading this its too late” mixtape. As far a me being updated with rock I tend to look out for the bigger names such as pink floyd and cold play, but a better rock band reference may put them on pause for the moment.

Album reviews really do matter

What better way to find out if a song or album is good enough to listen to than ones opinion? There is no really other way besides feedback. If someone hasn’t heard a song but saw who it was by they may think its good or not. Unless you actually read or hear what someone rated it as. People do this all the time and its an effective method to use so you wont have to waste your time trying to figure out if its good or not. The bar is set high for certain artists, if they don’t produce then just like a teacher we will give them a poor grade. They have a reputation to live up to and if they don’t provide quality music then their career will end shortly. The fans are the nucleus to their success and without that they are nothing.

Drakes highly anticipated album “Views from the 6″ has a lot of people on the edge of their seats. Especially since he released a preview with a mixtape Wednesday night called ” If your reading this it,s too late”. Majority everything he puts out most people like until now. Reading around and also asking people do they enjoy the mixtape, a common response was that it kind of all sounds the same. That’s not a good sign if Drake has high expectations for the release of his fourth album. We all have favorite artists but is there really a number one ? J.Cole tried to make it clear on his third album 2014 Forest Hills Drive. Even though it was released early December it’s really relatable. The whole playlist may effect the urban community or people who have been through a struggle, and for others are hearing his story.

Even though much of other kinds of music wasn’t talked about in this post I’m just in the process of learning about the others. Just like everything else things take time to blossom and with patience something good comes out from it. I do challenge readers to let me know if I was wrong about my comments, it will help me learn and create better material for future posts

Who is Cedric Price ?

HellLife is full of celebrationso viewers my name is Cedric Price II. I’m currently a junior at Texas state who is majoring in Advertising. Born in the unique city of Austin, Texas with a great up bringing, made me the interactive guy I present you with today. Besides family basketball is my first love, but what guy doesn’t enjoy sports ? If i could describe myself in one word it would be “Chill”. There is not really much that bothers me and I’m always looking forward to new experiences. Food & music are the two things I’ve met most people with. It lets you know how they are personally without even saying a word sometimes. So I chose the idea of asking friends ” What are types of music you recommend besides rap and why do you enjoy it ?”

I wanted  to branch out from my comfort zone and explore the rest of the music world. When I interview some friends of mine the most common response I had received was country music. Being in Texas doesn’t have anything to do with it, it’s just that its something they really relate to.

” I grew up farming, fishing, and doing the lifestyle they talk about” said Kevin Moon. Others said the lyrics are stuff they actually experience, such as heartbreak, finding love and having a good time. Yeah rap my talk about that stuff too but the wealthy lifestyle they live is unobtainable, unless you have money to just do as you please. Taylor swift is at the top of her game right now but she is diverse with her music. In my mind I’m just thinking her music is specifically for women. “No!” “Her music is good because shes real” said Estefanina Chavez, a close friend of mine.

I hope to find out more about life in general and maybe even pick up things I might have never thought of trying. Music is so much more than instruments and electronics coming together as one. Stories told from ones point of view and created for peoples interest. I’m hoping to excite other music lovers on this topic so they can learn just as much as I am during this process.
